In February 2020, I spent 6 days on Safari in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with six other photographers from across the United States. We traversed both the Ngoronogoro and Ndutu National Parks in two safari vehicles driven by local guides and lead by Tom and Laura Mace of Tripod Travelers.

Visiting this area has been a dream since I took my first adventure to Africa in 2000, and thanks to the knowledge and keen eye of our leaders and guides, it was all I had hoped for and more!

One of the major advantages on going on a safari designed specifically for photographers is everyone on the safari understands the need to minimize movement and stay in a location long enough to get the photos you came to take.

Hopefully my photos will give you and idea of what this area has to offer to those who want to photograph or simply observe incredible wildlife in its natural environment.

There are some 42,200 Masai pastoralists living in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) with their cattle, donkeys, goats and sheep. During the rains they move out on to the open plains; in the dry season they move into the adjacent woodlands and mountain slopes. The Masai are allowed to take their animals into the Crater for water and grazing, but not to live or cultivate there. Elsewhere in the NCA they have the right to roam freely.
