The juniper hearth in the center of the square, in front of which an annual ceremony to hail Maitreya (Buddha of the Future) is held, is very significant to the Tibetans who pray before the hearth for good fortune in the coming the year. On cool days, similar ovens keep the chill away from the square and can give visitors and residents an opportunity to warm their hands. |
