Our visit to Chinchero included an opportunity to see the various methods the Andean women use to create beautifully woven and colored textiles.
Nilda Callaņaupa, pictured at left, established the weaving cooperative in Chinchero and routinely explains to visitors the many types of traditional products produced by the weavers and the multi-step processes necessary to produce some of the finest textiles in Peru.
As Nilda explains, the weavers demonstrate how the yarn is prepared: creating natural dies the weavers use, dipping the unbleached yarn in a boiling vat of dye, spinning the dried yarn and, finally, winding the yarn to be used by the weavers.
Weavers, in traditional dress, are positioned at stations around the complex yard to demonstrate the various age-old weaving techniques used to produce table runners, table cloths, placemats, belts, sashes, camera straps, etc. all of which are available to the discerning visitor.
