Ollantaytambo was our introduction to the Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley.
At an altitude of 3,025 meters above sea level, this complex Incan city was built into a steep mountainside as a strategic outpost for defense and a religious center.
The site consists of enormous, stepped terraces constructed of unbelievably huge stones that were harvested from the rock quarry was across the river valley on the opposite hillside. Workers moved the stones by using sloping planes, ramps and rollers.
Covering 6,714 hectacres, it is the only place where you can find people who are living in the same houses that once belonged to the noble Incas, on streets that have kept their Inca names people who choose to maintain the old stlye of living and continue to dress in the old ways.
Regardless of how they choose to live, all residents have get their water supplied via the amazing, Inca irrigation systems - even the local modern restaruant and hotels.
