Chinchero was a religious, political, administrative and military complex and for a time served as an important pre-Inca urban center.

The colonial church, above, was constructed upon what was a beautifully constructed Inca wall. The quality of the original wall's construction leads to speculation that it was probably the base of an Inca palace.

Respect for the elegance of the Incal walls is demonstrated in the intrically designed stone work of the square and the walkway that contain several religiously-significant, finly created, repetitive patterns.
