Cairo - St. Simon Complex - Old Cairo

Lying behind "garbage city", is the The Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner, a Coptic (Christian) monastery-complex encompassing seven churches and chapels hidden in a series of caves in the Mokattam Mountain.

You reach the monastery through a maze of narrow village streets and alleys with trash carts passing you by.

And finally, at the end of the village, is an unexpected, open area, with a series of incredible carvings of Biblical scenes, such as the Holy Family's journey and the Nativity, carved by a Polish artist, into the sides of the mountain.
