  Cairo's "Garbage City"

When I saw that truck ahead of our car I just knew we had reached the infamous "Mansheiyet Nasser" — garbage city.

The city was erratically established in 1969 when the Governor decided to move all the Zabbalin (garbage collectors) of Cairo to one of the hills of the Mokattam Mountains.

There, the collectors built themselves primitive houses of tin and, in 1987, the number of trash collectors living in the area reached about 15,000.

Since then, this number has doubled.
