On an enormous desert plateau, that once was on the banks of and connected to the Nile River by a series of canals, is an amazing historic complex including the necropolis of Saqqara and the Giza with its Great Pyramids — one of the famous seven wonders of the ancient world — and the symbol of Egypt - the Sphinx. Now partly overrun by the southern outskirts of Cairo, this area is a monument to the expression of a civilization which had already achieved a remarkable level of technological development in the 3rd millennium B.C. |
